C1 A three hour open book exam that challenges students’ understanding of theatre and dramatic performance. The exam is split is into three different sections – two set texts and an analysis of a live theatre production. The two texts that we will look at are Servant To Two Masters By Carlo Goldoni, a 18th Century comedy based on Commedia Dell’Arte and Our Country’s Good by Timberlake Wertenbaker, a contemporary play that explores the first penal colony in Australia. Throughout the academic year we will go and see a variety of theatrical performances that cover a range of different performance styles and techniques. C2 A devised piece of drama that is influenced by a chosen theatrical practitioner. The drama can be based on published literature or art, an adaptation of poetry, focussed on a historical event or theme or wholly original. Pending on the group size, the maximum length of performance is 30 minutes. The performance will be supported by a working notebook which is worth 40 marks. This is split into the two sections and supports their knowledge, understanding and exploration regarding the devising process and how it links to the practitioner that has been chosen. C3 Exploration of three extracts taken from three different plays. Only one extract will be performed to an audience and marked by an AQA examiner – this performance should also be linked to a practitioner. The three extracts allow the students to challenge their understanding of theatrical performance and develop a deeper level of character knowledge. Candidates are also expected to write a reflective report for the whole process, drawing on their analytical and evaluative skills to look back on all three extracts. Both of the practical components (2 and 3) offer a range of theatrical disciplines; performer, director, lighting designer, costume designer, sound designer and puppet designer.
