The course introduces students to a wide range of writers, ideas and forms of expression through a selection of novels, plays and poems drawn from the last six centuries. Emphasis is placed on the development of intelligent, informed, articulate personal response. Students must be prepared to read widely, think for themselves, use initiative and handle information and opinion in a skilful and mature way. Teaching relies heavily on discussions, so active participation is important. There are many opportunities for taking advantage of London’s rich cultural life, and students are expected to treat such activities as an important part of the course.
