The emphasis of this course is on the practical aspects of science. You will explore the range of opportunities available in the science industries and gain all of the skills you need to further your studies in science or to begin working in a laboratory or research environment. Students on this course perform exceptionally well they have won the National Outstanding Science Student of the Year award three times in the past five years at the Natioal BTEC Awards and have progressed to top university courses or to various rewarding careers The course is made up of eighteen units such as those listed. The majority of the units are taught in a highly practical manner with experiments and hands on tasks to be completed. Fundamentals of science: Basic scientific theories; Practical techniques; Methods used to prepare chemicals, sampling techniques, and analytical techniques used in quality control: Scientific investigation; Methods used by scientists to plan, carry out and present their work: Perception of science; How science is represented in the media and ethical issues: Working in the science industry; The operation and organisation of science-related companies: Application of number; Calculations needed for laboratory work: Biology; Functioning of the human body; genetics; micro-organisims, fighting infections: Chemistry; Carrying out reactions, producing compunds; Physics; Imaging techniques, use of radiation in medicine, electricity, energy transfers.
