Russian (IB Higher & Standard Level)

UPDATED 20161018 12:16:02

The study of Russian at IB (group 2) is a language acquisition course for students with some prior knowledge of the target language. While learning this additional language, the course provides the opportunity for enjoyment, creativity and intellectual stimulation. Standard and Higher Levels are differentiated by the number of teaching hours, the depth of syllabus coverage, the study of literature at Higher Level, the level of challenge and the demands of the assessment criteria. Students develop the four skills they have known at GCSE to the levels required to deal with more complex themes, including Communication and Media, Global Issues, Social Relationships, Cultural Diversity, Customs and Traditions and Science and Technology. At Higher Level, students will also study two works of literature. Students will reflect upon multifaceted ideas and shades of opinion and learn to tailor their language to different contexts. This is achieved through a range of activities encompassing a variety of styles and registers and full use of the school’s access to various media. The Learning Resource Centre is stocked for research and reading for pleasure, films, periodicals, TV and the Internet. Students are encouraged to use Russian as their means of communication at all times. To facilitate this, additional support is provided outside timetabled lessons by a weekly conversation class with a foreign language assistant. At the heart of the IB is the development of an awareness and appreciation of other peoples, their cultures and perspectives. In Modern Languages, in addition to the cultural knowledge acquired in lessons, we offer students the opportunity to visit n Moscow/ St. Petersburg during their course and we organise regular local trips to extend language learning beyond the classroom.
