Psychology is the most popular Humanities subject for IB students at Bexley Grammar School. It involves the study of human behaviour from various different perspectives (biological, cognitive and sociocultural) and in different areas of human experience (memory, emotion, persuasion, depression, phobia, violence, attraction, belonging, helping and more…). It also involves conducting your own experiment and, for Higher level students, an extra paper on research methods. You can take Psychology at Higher or Standard level, and there’s little real difference in the difficulty at the two levels: Higher students have more to learn but are assessed in a very similar manner. There are two papers for Standard level students and three for Highers. If it’s part of the human condition we’ll try to say something about it, but don’t opt for IB Psychology and expect to learn how to analyse others; you’ll come out with more questions than answers.
