AS Level Unit HSC01: Effective Caring & Communication This unit considers essential caring techniques, quality of life factors, barriers to effective care, poor treatment, caring and communication skills related to a client group and care setting of the student’s choice. The student must produce a portfolio of coursework to fulfil the requirements of the unit. Unit HSC03: Life as a challenge This unit is assessed through an examination in June of the course. Students will learn about a range of challenges faced by people with a disability, learning disability, mental health issues and social circumstances. They will investigate the causes and impact of the challenge; barriers faced by individuals; safeguarding and support provided for individuals facing a challenge. A2 Level Unit HSC05: Learning and Development This unit is assessed through examination in June of Year 13. It aims to develop an understanding of the influences that can affect learning and development and the key theories which try to explain behaviour. Students study lifestyle choices, life events, illness and health conditions, theories of human development, perspectives to understand behaviour and strategies associated with the theories. Unit HSC06: Practitioner Roles This unit aims to increase understanding of the world of work in health, social care, children and young people and community justice sectors, it also helps students reflect on their own suitability for different job roles. This is a synoptic unit. The student must produce a portfolio of coursework to fulfil the requirements of the unit.
