If you love reading and enjoy discussing and writing about poetry, drama and prose, if you want to improve your skills of critical analysis and relish interpreting texts in a variety of ways- then English Literature is for you. A literature class is one in which every student is expected to have an opinion, be devoted to improving their writing style and have a passionate and creative outlook. At the core of all the set texts is a tragic hero or heroine who is flawed in some way, a character who suffers and causes suffering to others. In all the texts there is an interplay between what might be seen as villains and victims. Some tragic features will be more in evidence in some texts than in others and students will need to understand how particular aspects of the tragic genre are used and how they work in the four chosen texts.
