This A-Level is a two year qualification. Selected students may have the opportunity to sit AS. Component 1: Personal Investigation: This component consists of a major practical, theme-based portfolio undertaken around a theme that reflects personal interests. Portfolios are expected to evidence the exploration of a wide range of Fine Art materials (e.g. drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, ceramics and installation). Students will initially be taught through studio workshops which focus on the acquisition of valuable skills (including experimentation, risk-taking, drawing and the ability to analyse and synthesise information and ideas) as well learning to develop and refine techniques. As the course progresses students are expected to use these skills more independently to develop their own line of study. At the end of the course students will showcase their skills by creating an exhibition of their work. Understanding the work of other artists is a vital aspect of this course, students will learn to critically evaluate and analyse their own work in context. This area of study will culminate in the creation of a Gallery Guide to accompany the exhibition (1000-3000 words). Component 2: Externally Set Assignment: Students respond to an externally set brief by preparing a body of work within a specific time frame. This will culminate in the production of a final piece of work undertaken within 15 hours of supervised time.
