AS English Language

UPDATED 20151109 11:47:28

This unit is split into two equal halves. Section A: Text Varieties and Section B: Language and Social Contexts, although there are many links between the topics. Both sections require students to explore/understand/analyse both written and spoken language. Students will consider a wide range of written texts analysing how they are structured, what relationships exist between the writer and the reader and how purpose/audience/context shape our use of language. They will also consider spoken texts, investigating how speech is structured and how people work together to hold meaningful conversations. Language and Gender, Language and Power and Language and Technology are all studied as part of investigating language in social contexts. Students will study a variety of texts, considering how gender, power and technology are represented. Discussions about how texts work and what messages can be portrayed through different texts will enable students to make connections to their learning from the Text Varieties part of the course and provide opportunities to explore relevant research surrounding the topic areas. They will be assessed by an essay question responding to a text. The module is assessed by one external exam. Unit 2: Creating texts This unit enables students to develop their own creative writing leading to an individual coursework folder being created and submitted for assessment. Students study different style models - for example: sports journalism, short stories, editorials, persuasive texts and speeches, and scripts amongst others. They learn to identify the main features, think about how and why particular words/structures are used and then use this analysis to enhance their own writing skills. The coursework folder will include two creative pieces, examples of style models with annotations and commentaries on the written pieces.
