Course Content: The IB Diploma Programme Information Technology in a Global Society (ITGS) course is the study and evaluation of the impacts of information technology (IT) on individuals and society. It explores the advantages and disadvantages of the access and use of digitised information at the local and global level. ITGS provides a framework for the student to make informed judgments and decisions about the use of IT within social contexts. What skills will you gain? This course enables students to: • Develop an understanding of issues of information systems, • Evaluate the consequences of IT on society, • Discuss and evaluate the social significance of IT, • Discuss ethical considerations arising from the application of IT, • Predict the changes most likely to emerge in the future. Why do this subject? The rapid advances in technology have plunged modern society into an information age. Extensive international databases of information can be readily accessed and communications can be sent around the world in seconds. Consequently, the collection, processing, analysis and representation of information have become a dynamic dimension in today’s society and an understanding of these issues would benefit any student regardless of their future career path. Where will it lead? Technology and science are transforming our world, changing the way we do business, the way we learn, the way we communicate, and even the way we entertain ourselves. Success in any field – law, medicine, business, education, entertainment, finance and investment – requires a command of technology. As the convergence of telecommunications and computing, information technology is the foundation of the 21st century economy. IT offers fascinating, mission-critical, high paying jobs and multiple career paths.
