Students need to have an interest in all areas of the modern media landscape: from the traditional mass media such as TV and Radio, to new media like YouTube and Spotify. Students will need to be able to investigate these topics in both a theoretical and practical sense, engaging with issues such as the effects of screen violence on audiences, or the representation of specific groups of people by the media. The ability to analyse, interpret and deconstruct media texts is vital, as is the ability to structure that analysis into a logical and structured argument in written form. Students will also produce their own media texts, either on their own or in groups, such as the opening sequence to a film in a specific genre, or sample pages for a magazine. A certain level of and experience in using creative and technical skills in the areas of photography, cinematography, video editing and/or journalism would be advantageous. Students should be comfortable using ICT to produce media products.
