The IB recognises the major role of languages in the world by insisting that students take at least one foreign language (known as Language B) at either higher or standard level. It is essential that all students should have at their command more than one language and that they should learn to think internationally. The apprenticeship of learning a foreign language is both a training for later language acquisition and a testing ground for tolerance, in that it will by its very nature teach new ways of thinking and of looking at the world. The aims of the Language B programme at both higher and standard levels are t develop your powers of expression in a second language; provide you with an efficient tool for the study of other subjects; bring you into contact with ways of thought which differ from your own.
