Dance (Performing Arts) Specialist Qualification

This is a practically based, work related course which is equivalent to one A Level. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic work place situations. The course focuses upon key skills in Dance which include choreography, technique and leadership. A variety of dance styles are addressed throughout the course. To focus on a particular subject area and develop specialist skills and knowledge. The course prepares you for working in the Performing Arts industry or for Higher Education. Unit 1 – Dance Performance (Mandatory) You are assessed on performance skills as a dancer and how you conduct yourself during the learning and rehearsal period. Unit 2 – Performing to an Audience (Mandatory) You will be required to perform to a large audience at our annual Dance Show. You will also have input into choreographing and organising the Show Unit 3 – Dance Appreciation The study of some professional dance works. You will be assessed on your ability to accurately replicate movement, use the professional work as a stimuli for your own choreography and your ability to understand the underpinning theoretical aspects. Unit 4 - The Healthy Performer Candidates learn about the body and the scientific support dancers require to reach the top of their performance. Assessment is on the understanding of the different body systems and the ability to explain how they relate to each other. Unit 5 – Ballet You will participate in technique classes as an understanding of ballet is fundamental. You will learn a piece of professional repertoire, watch ballet at the theatre and have the opportunity to choreograph. Unit 6 – Urban Dance You will learn a variety of urban dance techniques and synthesise these into your own dance choreography.
