What is the Advanced Specialist Qualification in Computing? This qualification is designed to support learners who are interested in a two-year, full-time course which meets entry requirements for a course in computer-related study in higher education, IT Apprenticeships or direct employment. The course is equivalent to three A Levels. Why study the Advanced Specialist Qualification in Computing? Advanced Specialist Qualifications are understood and recognised by a large number of organisations in the IT industry. They are developed to ensure they meet employer and student needs. The course prepares you for working in any organisation and counts towards your UCAS points for Further Education. You will also gain valuable work experience in the IT industry. Unit 1: Principles of Computer Science (Mandatory) This unit covers the principles that underpin all areas of computer science. Unit 2: Fundamentals of Computer Systems (Mandatory) You will study the fundamental principles of how computer systems work. Unit 3: Planning and Management of Computer Projects (Mandatory) Learn how project planning and management concepts are applied to computing projects. Unit 4: Software Design and Development Project (Mandatory) Learn the knowledge and skills involved in the design, creation and evaluation of software using Python. Unit 5: IT Systems Security and Encryption (Mandatory) You will study IT system security threats and the methods to protect against them. Unit 6: Applications of Social Media (Mandatory) Explore how organisations use social media to promote their products and/or services. Unit 7: The Impact of Computing (Mandatory) Study the impact that changes in computing have on organisations and wider society, incorporating a plan to implement a technology development. In addition to six specialist coursework units. Areas to include: website development, networking, mobile apps, computer systems, digital video, human computer interaction.
