AS Units: Work, Poverty and Welfare Unit: The nature, existence and persistence of poverty in contemporary society and the distribution of poverty, wealth and income between different social groups. The responses and solutions to poverty by the state and by private, voluntary and informal welfare providers in contemporary society. The organisation and control of the labour process, including the division of labour, the role of technology, skill and de-skilling and the significance of work for people's lives and life chances, including the effects of globalisation. Education Unit: Different explanations of the role of the education system; different explanations of the different educational achievement of social groups by social class, gender and ethnicity; relationships and processes within schools, with particular reference to teacher/pupil relationships, pupil subcultures, the hidden curriculum and the organisation of teaching and learning; the significance of state policies for an understanding of the role, impact and experience of education. A2 Units The Media Unit: The new forms of media and their significance for an understanding of the role of the media in contemporary society. The relationship between ownership and control of the media and the processes of selection and presentation of the content of the news. The media representations of age, social class, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and disability and the relationship between the meda, their content and presentation, and audiences.. Crime and Deviance Unit: Different crimes are studied in terms of their impact on the modern world and the theories behind crime. The relationship between crime and globalisation, the control, prevention, punishment and the social composition of crime as well as research methods.
