Textiles AS Level

UPDATED 20161014 12:23:51

The course is designed to encourage candidates to take a broad view of design, to develop their capacity to design and make products and to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing. The course is intended for those who enjoy being creative, who like drawing, experimenting and modeling ideas as well as making the final product. Textiles provides wide study opportunities ranging from fashion, interiors, accessories and aesthetics to industrial uses of textiles and from creative and industrial work to aspects of manufacturing and industrial and commercial practices. The course may be grouped in four broad areas: • The ability to design and make products in response to a design brief; understanding concepts, application of materials and the development of practical making skills through to construction processes to produce objects of beauty and function. • To investigate and analyse popular modern products with a focus on design, manufacturing processes and performance. • The study of new technology, economic and market forces, social and environmental influences on the work of designers and design in society. • The focus of practical outcomes involves understanding industrial manufacturing procedures and how these affect design principles.
