What will I learn? Your two years studying for GCSE English and English Literature will focus on the skills of reading, writing and speaking and listening. You will experience a wide variety of fictional texts during the two years, including modern novels, poetry, drama and short stories. You will be taught how to analyse these texts and how to comment on the different language and devices used by writers. You may also experience a variety of non-fiction texts, and you will learn how presentational devices and the language used can manipulate a reader. You will also have the opportunity to write for different audiences and purposes, and you will be able to use the knowledge you have gained from reading to improve your own writing. English will continuously assess your ability at speaking and listening; lessons will allow you to discuss your ideas with others and you will always be encouraged to share your ideas with the class. How will I be taught? You will be taught in mixed ability groups of about 28 to 30 students. You will be encouraged to work in a variety of different situations; this may include working independently, in pairs or in groups. You will build up a folder of high quality work during the two years and you will be given the opportunity to evaluate your progress. How will I be assessed? Your coursework folder makes up 40% of your final GCSE mark for English, and 30% for English Literature. For GCSE English you will sit two exams and you will complete one exam for English Literature. You will also be formally assessed for speaking and listening and this will go towards your final coursework mark.
