Philosophy IB SL Level 3

UPDATED 20151029 11:56:59

There are three parts to the course: Themes, Coursework and Texts. At higher level there is also an unseen analysis of non-philosophical material. In the Core section a study is undertaken into “What is a human being”: this is again divided into Mind and Body and The Human Condition. The element of Mind and Body involves examining topics such as the nature of personhood, universality and diversity of humanity, the nature of self and freedom and determinism; The Human Condition examines the concept of human nature and human condition in a social context, the meaning of life, the aspects of freedom and responsibility and the nature of values or nihilism. In addition to the Core theme, there will also be a study of another theme for Standard Level and two themes for Higher Level: these will be for 2011/12, the Philosophy of Religion and/or the Theories and Problems of Ethics. Philosophy of Religion involves studying ideas such as what does the word 'God' mean? Arguments for the existence of God, the problem of evil, and religion and gender issues. Theories and problems of Ethics involves studying whether moral principles exist? Whether some virtues more important than others? As well as ethical theories such as Utilitarianism.
