The Further Maths course is for those with a real passion for Maths. The Further Maths course leads to two A levels – one in Mathematics and one in Further Maths. Students are taught in separate sets from those taking single A level and Further Maths takes up two timetable blocks. Students cover the A level course during the first year and then progress to the more challenging Further Maths modules during the second year. Six modules are taken in each year. These comprise of a mixture of Core Maths modules and applied modules. Core Maths continues and expands upon the algebra and trigonometry studied at higher level GCSE and introduces a new area of Maths – calculus. Skill in algebra is particularly important as it underpins all other topics. Applied modules are taken in Mechanics, Statistics and Decision Maths. The Mechanics modules cover analysing forces, accelerations, momentum and similar ideas to describe what happens in physical situations. The Statistics modules take on the work done at GCSE to cover ways of analysing and displaying numerical data, and of drawing conclusions from this. Probability theory becomes a key tool. The Decision modules cover use of algorithms, graph theory, networks and linear programming. There is no coursework at AS/A level.
