The course is subject to specification Changes 2017 Within the AS course you will learn about: The methods of exploring and understanding spoken and written language in use The way power is represented in spoken and written texts The way power is presented in interactions, for example in interviews and debates How gender is represented and reproduced in everyday texts How gender is influential in conversation, and what theory has to say about the role of gender How the varieties of language are shaped by modern technology You will be expected to create a number of texts for specific audiences and purposes At A2, you will study: How children from 0-11 years acquire language How and why the English language has changed over time and the impact of this change. An aspect of language you have a particular interest in, with the aim of producing an investigation You will also produce a media text, such as a magazine or newspaper article, on a chosen topic.

Name: English Language Qualification title: English Language Qualification type: GCE A/AS Level or equivalent Assessment AS - Year 12 A2 - Year 13 20% Coursework 80% Exam AS: 2 Modules Unit 1 2 hour examination Assesses knowledge of language in 3 specific social contexts: language and gender, language and power and language and technology 60% of AS level Unit 2 Coursework For this unit you will be expected to produce writing in different genres and for different audiences and purposes. 40% of AS level In Y13 there are 2 further units at A2 level Unit 3 2 hour, 30 minute examination This unit builds on the skills acquired at AS Language, with an additional focus on two new areas of language study: language acquisition and language change 30% of A level Unit 4 Coursework This unit requires you to produce an investigation on an aspect of language of interest to you.
