English Literature: Realism in the 19th Century Novel

The literary movement of realism will be studied through examining elements of nineteenth century prose fiction. Recurring themes of interest will include: sin, guilt and redemption; the urban and the rural in the context of industrialisation, the family and the role of women, and crime and punishment. The three primary texts will be: George Elliot's Adam Bede (1859) Thomas Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886) Charles Dickens' Great Expectations (1860)
