Professional and vocational qualifications lead to some kind of accreditation, be it from an examining body, such as City and Guilds or Edexcel, or professional recognition, such as from Construction Skills or Lantra. The Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) recognises vocational achievement through the attainment of credits for units of study and for whole qualifications. The smallest qualification is the Award, then the Certificate, and the largest is the Diploma, although there are other intermediate qualifications also available. The duration of study will typically reflect the size of the qualification. Some Certificates of Competence may be achieved in a shorter amount of time, as they are used to endorse skills already attained. Courses run on specified dates and on-demand.
