Who is the course for? Students considering a career in Art and Design and wishing to study 2D and Graphic Design. You will work with live briefs and competitions and will be supported in doing this by working with and meeting practicing designers. Students design logos, packaging, book and CD covers, advertising and promotional materials and may get involved in web design. Typically, a graphic designer will possess the following skills: - Creative flair, originality and a strong visual sense - Strong computer skills - Confidence to present and explain ideas to clients and colleagues - An interest in graphics and typography. What can it lead to? This is an excellent progression route to an art foundation course and higher education courses in graphics, packaging and typography, graphic information design and illustration. There are many courses available at universities and arts colleges across the UK. Employment is also an option. What will I study? This course enables you to develop a wider understanding of graphic design and prepare an art portfolio for university. You'll explore a range of ideas within graphic design and you'll learn through practical and critical activities to express and gain knowledge of the different areas within graphic design, by creating sketchbooks of research, ideas and development. You'll have a choice to explore a range of techniques using a variety of 2D materials and computer work. The course is equivalent to two A levels and is very varied: as well as furthering your own practical skills through mediums including Photoshop, you'll visit art galleries. Your second year will be mainly taken up with developing your art portfolio for university interviews and professionally presenting work produced during the course.
