UPDATED 20151111 13:34:59

Course Description This course is designed for those students who have completed a Level 1 Carpentry & joinery course at school or college already. You will develop your woodworking skills and your organisation and teamworking skills which are essential in the work place. A building isn't all about bricks and mortar. Timber is an essential part of just about every structure, and it's the carpenter and joiner's job to prepare it and put it into place on a construction site. It's a skilled job that utilises special tools and often involves many different kinds of wood. If you enjoy using your hands, have good hand and eye co-ordination and enjoy being part of a team then a carpenter or joiner could be the ideal role for you. You'll need to be good at maths as you'll be calculating angles and measurements. We run a series of taster session during the year for you to come and have a go at Construction to see if this is the right choice for you. Extended Description You will have the opportunity to carry out practical work and will cover a range of different skills including: • Carry out maintenance work • Operate circular saws • Building methods and construction • First and second fixing operation • Health and safety • First fix: floors and roofing • First fix: partitions and stair • English & maths It is expected that you would undertake some work experience as part of the course, this is usually in the form of voluntary projects co-ordinated by the tutors.
