Textile Design

UPDATED 20151022 14:50:44

The A Level Textile Design course is an exciting and innovative course, which is centered around the creative exploration of textiles techniques. This course is offered by LCHS Art Department and follows a similar format to current Fine Art and Photography A Level courses. Throughout the course students will have the opportunity to experiment with a wide range of materials and processes. These include traditional methods and new approaches and technologies. Students will also research contemporary and historical textiles work from cultures around the world, developing their own work in response to a range of themes and ideas. During the course, students opt to specialize in one or more areas of Textile Design, including fashion, printed and/or dyed fabric and materials, domestic textiles and wallpaper, interior design, constructed textiles or textile installation. Drawing is taken as a starting point, using a variety of methods and media. Students typically create sketchbooks and journals which record their ideas and experimentation, as well as making samples and test pieces. Students also make one or more final pieces for each unit of work, which might range from a dress or fashion item to a wall hanging or a sculptural piece of textiles work. Imaginative and skillful presentation of students’ work is essential. Students taking either the AS Level or the A Level award must be prepared to give extra time to studies outside normal lesson time. Students who have taken GCSE or BTEC Art, Photography or Textiles courses must have shown enthusiasm and commitment to their studies. Students wishing to take the subject for the first time should have a folder of personal work that demonstrates their suitability for the course. Producing textiles work to the required standard takes dedication and a passion to succeed.
