Photography

UPDATED 20151022 14:13:39

Students will be introduced to a range of photographic media, techniques and processes. They will explore the work of other photographers and a wider range of art and design, including historical and contemporary work from a range of cultures. Students must demonstrate their understanding of different styles of photography and other areas of art and design. During the course, students will elect to work in one or more genres of photography. These include portraiture, landscape photography, still-life photography, documentary photography, experimental imagery and photographic installation. Students will explore elements of visual language and demonstrate the ability to respond to an issue, theme, concept or idea. Students will show an appreciation of viewpoint, composition, depth of field and movement and time-based photography. They will also study the appropriate use of the camera, film, lenses and lighting and consider appropriate methods of developing and printing images. Traditional darkroom techniques are taught on the course as well as digital editing using programs such as Photoshop. Imaginative and skilful presentation of a portfolio of photographic work is essential. It is recommended that students have access to their own digital camera, preferably a DSLR. Students taking either the AS or the full A Level award must be prepared to give extra time to studies outside normal lesson time. They must have shown enthusiasm and commitment to Art or Photography at GCSE level and/or have a folder of personal work which demonstrates their suitability for the course. Producing photographic work and presenting it to the required standard takes dedication and a passion to succeed.
