The BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma is suited to students who have an appetite to develop their skills and knowledge in all areas of the arts. There is a particular emphasis on integrating the performing arts, and the course is designed to give equal focus to dance, drama and music. This is a vocational course – it is practical and takes a real-world approach to learning. You should enjoy going to see professional performing arts productions and taking part in practical workshops. The course is made up of 6 or 12 units: 1 or 2 core units and 5 or 10 specialist units. The first core unit is called Performing to an Audience – this involves staging a performance with the other members of your Performance Arts groups. On a BTEC, your progress is measured throughout the course, allowing you to reflect on your own performance on a continual basis – there is no external exam. Some of the work you will be expected to produce will be in written form, but you will also be required to demonstrate your skills and knowledge in practical situations. East unit is split into assignments and you will have criteria to meet at a Pass, Merit or Distinction level. The specialist units may include elements of music, dance, physical theatre and musical theatre suited to each students strengths and future plans, It may also include widely applicable units such as business and marketing skills in performing arts, rehearsal techniques, being a healthy performed and the history of performance.
