The Qualification has two pathway options; Computing or Information Technology. Topic areas studied include three mandatory units and one option unit. Computing Unit 1 – Principles of Computer Science (External written exam 2 hours) This unit covers the principles that underpin all areas of computer science. It will develop your computational-thinking skills and you will apply those skills to solve problems. Unit 2 - Fundamentals of Computer Systems (External written exam 1hr 45 mins) Learners study the fundamental principles of how computer systems work, including the role of hardware and software, the way components of a system work together and how data in a system is used. Unit 7 - IT Systems Security and Encryption (Internally Assessed) Learners study IT system security threats and the methods to protect against them. Learners undertake activities to protect IT systems from security threats, including data encryption. Unit 14 - Computer Games Development (Internally Assessed) Learners investigate the computer games industry and its impact on technological and social trends. They will design and develop a computer game to meet requirements. Information Technology Unit 1: Information Systems (Externally Assessed) Learners study the role of computer systems and the implications of their use in personal and professional situations. Unit 2: Creating Systems to Manage Information (Externally Assessed) Learners study the design, creation, testing and evaluation of a relational database system to manage information. Unit 3: Using Social Media in Business (Internally Assessed) Learners explore how businesses use social media to promote their products and services. Learners also implement social media activities in a business to meet requirements. Unit 6: Website Development (Internally Assessed) Learners investigate website development principles and they design and develop a website using scripting languages
