English language and literature brings together the skills of technical analysis and literary discussion and debate. You should not think of these as two separate strands as all units on the course will demand the integration of both. This course will introduce you to the nuts and bolts of language, as well as an element of creative writing. You will learn how to analyse speech and its representation. It will also include the study of poetry and comparative analysis through independent study. This course will teach you to develop autonomy as a reader; that is, to approach your reading thoughtfully and evaluate what you encounter for yourself rather than uncritically accepting the opinions of others. It will help you to understand how authors and journalists construct texts for different effects, as well as giving you the opportunity to do this yourself. You will study prose and drama texts which will be examined alongside a range of non-literary and spoken texts, allowing you to explore the connections between them. By focusing closely on the literary and language features, you will go on to develop your own parallel writing skills, producing creative writing that uses a particular style, register, and voice. Please note: When applying to study on our A Level courses, you only need to apply for one subject. You will have the chance to discuss all of your A Level subject choices when you attend your interview.
