This course introduces students to the workings of government in Britain and to many of the important political debates of today. It is relevant to anyone with an interest in current affairs. In the first term students study the theme of elections with particular reference to the electoral system of Britain. They also look at the influence of the party system and the role of pressure groups in politics. In the Spring Term the focus changes to “How parliament works” and in particular the role of the prime Minister and the Cabinet. Students also look into the nature and role of Local Government and the devolution of power. The final section of the AS course looks at the British Constitution and how it can change. The relationship between Great Britain and the European Union is also covered. In year 13, students focus on the use of political ideologies. There is also an in-depth analysis of political ideologies including Lliberalism, Conservatism, Socialism, Fascism. Students will also examine political issues including Ethnicity and Gender, the Environment, Education and the Economy.
