The Graphic Products design course provides an opportunity to build on the GCSE Technology course. Students extend their knowledge of materials and manufacturing, develop their understanding of school and industry based processes applying this knowledge and experience within a wide range of technological activities. Students will experience today’s technology and examine the possibilities and probabilities for tomorrow’s technology. The first year of the course is divided into two areas that are developed concurrently: The first module, Portfolio of Creative Skills, deals with the topics of: Product Investigation, Product Design and Product Manufacture. The second module, Design and Technology in Practice, looks at Materials & Components, Industrial & Commercial Practise, Quality Assurance and Health & Safety. The second year of the course has a similar structure to the first. The third module, Designing for the Future: studies Industrial & Commercial Practice, Systems and Control, Design Context, Influences of Design History on the development of product sustainability. The final module, Commercial Design, is a major coursework project that develops knowledge and designing skills from previous work. This project emphasises industrial designing and making practices. Students work to satisfy the need of a client or target market group.
