This course is aimed at those who are prepared for an open-minded exploration of the big questions, in particular the medical, legal and moral issues that affect the lives of us all today, as well as deeper philosophical questions about the nature of the universe and of humanity, and the existence or non-existence of God. The course provides a critical approach to the consideration of questions such as; Is it ever morally acceptable to go to war? Is there life after death? Should Euthanasia be legalised? During the course students are encouraged to developing skills of critical analysis and the ability to construct a persuasive, informed argument both in terms of discussion and written work. The course is divided into three elements: Philosophy, Ethics and Developments in Religious Thought. In philosophy students study topics such as Ancient Greek influences on philosophy including the metaphysics of Plato and Aristotle, issues surrounding the nature of the soul, mind and body and the coherence of theories about life after death. Through ethics pupils study of ethical theories such as Virtue Ethics and apply these to several moral issues including Euthanasia. Finally, pupils draw together the above by exploring the relationship between religion and society considering topics such as the challenge of secularism and materialism.
