This course provides comprehensive and integrated coverage of media theory and practice with special emphasis on emerging technologies, whilst investigating audiences as both producers and consumers of media texts. In the first unit students develop an appreciation and understanding of media products and concepts in order to evaluate how meanings and responses are created. They are encouraged to investigate the process of ‘meaning making’ in production and reception at text level (media products) and at platform level (media technologies). In the cross-media study, students explore two topics in detail. In Unit 2 students create two media artefacts taken from Broadcasting, Print or E-media. The production work should reveal the student’s own understanding of the media concepts that underpin a media product, therefore, an element of prior research is necessary and will be evident in the pre-production materials. Students also undertake a written evaluation. In the second year, students examine the media in a less formulaic way. Unit 3 encourages candidates to study the role of the media in contemporary society by referring to the wider contexts (social, political, economical & historical); by tackling media theory and by recognising major media issues and debates behind theory and caused by application of theory. Candidates are given two pre-set topics to examine across all three media platforms. Each candidate produces case study for each pre-set topic selected. The final unit draws together students’ knowledge and skills from all parts of the syllabus; they have opportunities to build on their skills from AS Level and investigate a theme or text in more depth. Students produce a piece of production work that reflects their research.
