Unit 1: Democracy, Empire and War: Britain, c1851–1964 This option allows students to study in breadth issues of change, continuity, cause and consequence in this period through the following key questions: • How did democracy and political organisations develop in Britain? • How important were ideas and ideologies? • How and with what effects did the economy develop? • How did society and social policy develop? • How and why did Britain’s position in the world change? • How important was the role of key individuals and groups and how were they affected by developments? Unit 2: The Cold War c.1945-1990 This option provides the opportunity to study a period of major change in depth, focusing on key ideas, events and developments • The Allies, 1945–1948 • Changing ideology, 1948–1990 • Proxy Wars 1950–1976 • The Global Cold War 1949–1990 • The edge of the Abyss, 1963–1985 • Glasnost and Perestroika, 1986–1990 Unit 3: Personal Study Pupils will write 3000-3500 words on a topic before 1770.
