The course has a strong emphasis on drawing skills and the ability to interpret and convey ideas through visual means. Students will develop their imaginative and creative powers and their experimental, analytical, and documentary skills. Students will be encouraged to reflect on their work and that of other artists using specialist vocabulary. The course follows a structured programme of visual study that encourages depth and breadth in the development of their visual language skills. Students will be expected to build on and develop their recording skills and demonstrate the skilful use of the formal elements: line, tone, colour, form, pattern, texture and structure; using a wide range of media and methods. Within this unit students will be required to analyse their own work and the work of other artists, gaining some insight into the meaning of art and the context in which it was created. The second year of the course incorporates two linked elements: a) Practical Work b) Personal Study It is essential that the two units are interlinked and students build on prior knowledge and experience gained from the course. The personal study will be the focus for the contextual analysis, this will be used to inform and inspire the students own creative visual ideas. Practical work should arise from the student’s current interests and experiences in art and design, together with knowledge, skills and understanding gained from earlier units. Your Personal Study will be a written submission of between 1000 and 3000 words and serve as a reflection of your practical and analytical studies. During both years of the course students receive information from which they must research and resource their ideas in response to the set theme which aim to build on previous experience to produce their own creative outcomes.
