AS UNIT 1: Listening and Appraising (30%) This unit concerns listening to music and understanding how it works. It is assessed in a 2 hour exam at the end of Year 12. You will also look at the History of Pop Music from 1960 onwards and Haydn’s Symphony No.105 as the historical topics. Your understanding will be assessed in the final exam by completing an essay question on each. AS UNIT 2: Composing (30%) Students compose a three-minute piece or an arrangement of 2 composition exercises to a chosen brief published in November. This is completed in 20 hours under controlled conditions. AS UNIT 3: Performing (40%) Students perform as a soloist and/or in ensembles. Students are free to choose music in any style. Any instrument(s) and/or voice(s) are acceptable as part of a 2-5 minute assessed performances You will develop in many areas: performance; composition; listening; team work; independent thinking skills. You will find the subject useful if you are looking for a career in the Performing Arts, Music or Media, or are hoping to pursue any degree or career in the Arts that involves a high level of communication with others e.g. teaching, management, sales and promotion, human resources. Music is highly regarded as an A level option by top universities and employers. It would also complement any career path which didn’t necessitate 3 specific subjects as it shows a breath of skill and as such is often valued by institutions and employers.
