This nationally recognised qualification includes units in all the main sciences with a focus on practical application in the health care sector. Units studied in the first year include developing effective communication, equality, diversity and rights, health, safety and security, personal and professional development, anatomy and physiology, nutrition, physical science for health, mobility and exercise, and health education. Units studied in the second year are development through life stages, public health, biochemistry, human Inheritance, microbiology, personal and professional development, sociological and psychological perspectives, physiology of fluid balance and science in practice. Strong links have been established with local employers in the health and care professions to support the vocational component of the course. This component is delivered through 100 hours of work experience in these professions and through college-based delivery. (100 hours in year one with optional extra hours in year two).
