Education In this topic, we will discover the role of education within our society including differences in attainment of social groups by social class, gender and ethnicity. We will also consider the functions of the education system as well as relationships and processes within schools. Families and Households In this topic, we will explore the changing nature of the family, such as marriage, divorce and childhood. We will investigate how the different sociological perspectives view these changes. We will also look at demographic trends in the UK since 1900. Mass Media In this topic, we will consider the role that the mass media play in today's society. We will explore the positive and negative aspects of the media, including issues of consumer choice and control. Crime and Deviance In this topic, we will look at the way in which crime is reported in society. We will discuss whether we are living in a crime wave or whether less crime is now being committed. We will also consider who really commits crime by looking at recent patterns and trends in relation to ethnicity, gender and social class. Theory and Methods In these topic areas, we will discuss the use of different research methods sociologists use to investigate social phenomena. We also examine the theoretical, practical and ethical considerations influencing choice of topic, choice of method and the conduct of research.
