Progression: A course in mathematics is not only an intellectual and enjoyable experience, but is also the gateway to a wide range of exciting and well rewarded careers. If you decide to take it further, perhaps even to university, then you could have a career in teaching, business, computing, finance, banking, insurance, stockbroking, statistics, accountancy, management, civil service and research. Course content: In the first year of the course you study the whole of the A level Mathematics ( Core 1 to 4, Statistics 1 and Mechanics 1 – see descriptions under A level Maths) because you have double the amount of lessons. In the second year you study Further Pure 1, Further Pure 2, Statistics 2, Mechanics 2 and Decision 1 and 2 to get the full A level Further Maths. If you decide to study only AS level Further then you study only 3 of these modules: 1. Decision Maths is about breaking down problems into small steps (algorithms). 2. For Statistics (S2) and Mechanics (M2) you build on the S1 and M1 that you would have studied in year 12 (See description under A level Maths). 3. Further Pure (FP1 and FP2) introduces new concepts such as matrices and complex numbers.
