GCE A Level in Media Studies/GCE AS Level in Media Studies

UPDATED 20161027 14:58:26

The Mass Media is everywhere in the modern day and it affects people's lives in a multitude of ways. Studying the media has taken on a new significance and importance following the explosion of social media websites, their use and misuse, the press phone hacking scandal and the emergence of new digital technology, which has impacted upon the production and consumption of film, TV, radio and the print media. Media Studies offers candidates the chance to combine academic work, research and creative practical skills in a variety of tasks, including analysis of a range of media texts, how communication takes place through the use of media language forms, representations and discussing the wider issues and debates that affect the media. Research is undertaken into media representations, narrative styles and genre with candidates themselves largely designing their own research tasks. Practical tasks involve research, planning and pre- production and production work using digital technology to create an original piece of media, again chosen by the candidate. An A Level in Media Studies, besides offering the chance to explore the exciting, innovative and increasingly important world of media, fosters independent learning, encourages students to question preconceptions and to challenge commonly held beliefs and to develop and refine creative skills. A firm foundation is therefore laid for a wide number of creative and academic courses at higher education, including journalism, film 8 TV, advertising, graphic design, web design, creative writing, marketing and broadcasting. The creative and media sectors are among the largest in the UK accounting for 10.6% of total exports and employing 2 million people, that's around 5% of the total workforce (source: DCMS, BBC).
