Biology as a subject continues to grow in all fields both on a molecular and global level. This course complements the traditional science subjects and provides a balance with the humanities and arts. The specification content will vary from the familiar, i.e. cells, to applications of modern medicine, i.e. the human genome project. You will get the opportunity to develop your understanding of the living world whilst enhancing a range of skills. AS Biology is comprised of four modules. Module 2 covers the foundations of Biology, including topics such as biological molecules and cell structure. Module 3 involves transport and exchange mechanisms and module 4 covers disease and biodiversity. Module 1 addresses practical skills; these are assessed throughout the course as well as being an integral part of the two written exams. AS Biology exists as a stand-alone qualification. If students continue to study the full A level they will be examined on these modules at the end of their second year, along with the year 2 content.
