Government and Politics is an interesting area of study in its own right, involving the analysis of ideas and the motives of individuals. The content of the course will focus on the politics of Britain, including political parties, pressure groups, protest movements, the media and the government system. To get the most out of the course you will need to follow current events through the newspapers, radio and television. You will be encouraged to express your own ideas and a wide variety of opinions will be welcomed. The course will help you to become more confident and articulate when arguing your case, both in writing and discussion. In Year 12 students are introduced to the range of ways in which we can participate in the political process. Students investigate some of these in depth including voting systems, political parties and pressure groups. In the second half of the year, students learn about the constitution of the UK and how the main institutions of Government, Parliament and the Judiciary operate. Students investigate the limits on governmental power and the constantly evolving relationship between these bodies.
