History is the study of ourselves, an investigation of human behaviour, an enquiry into our motives and the consequences of our actions. The ‘A’ level course will investigate a wide range of themes, focussing particularly on the history of Britain, Russia and the USA. Students will encounter a fascinating cast of characters, including saintly nurses, harsh dictators, charismatic leaders, a crazed Siberian monk and the ordinary men, women and children that have made history. ‘A’ level historians will join the History Department in trying to answer such fascinating questions such as:- Why was there a revolution in Russia? How did Joseph Stalin get rid of all his rivals in his quest for power? How did Russia survive great famines? How was Russia able to beat Hitler in the Great Patriotic War? What new opportunities were opened up to British women by the First World War? How important is the role of individuals in history? We will also try to answer questions about the chaos and mismanagement of the Crimea and the controversy over the “concentration camps” in the Boer War. What was the role played by the propaganda in the First World War? In Year 13 students complete a coursework unit which looks at Crime and Punishment. They are required to complete a two part assignment. Year 13 students also study America from 1930 - 1956 and the controversies surrounding the cause of the Depression and Roosevelt's response to it.
