Is this course for me? Textiles is a ‘hands-on’ course which will appeal to anyone interested in art-based textile approach. The school has a purpose built textile studio, which is extremely well-resourced with the equipment and materials needed for concentrating on a diverse range of specialist techniques and processes. The complete design process is studied with an emphasis on recording and responding to the visual world, including the wider textile arena and critical analysis of the work of others. Students have the opportunity to study contemporary and traditional textiles. What will I learn? Students are encouraged to work independently, developing strong observational skills, gathering relevant research, extending practical work and creating innovative, well executed final outcomes. Components of the course include: stitching for decoration and construction by hand or machine, application of surface pattern through dyeing and painting, felt-making, printing and manipulation of surface. Previous students have gone on to follow degree courses in Textile Design, Design Management, Textiles for Fashion & Interiors and Fashion Accessories Design at leading universities and art schools. Textile design is also useful for students interested in studying Interior design/Architecture at university.
