This course offers you the opportunity to study contrasting countries and periods examine historical sources along with the work of historians and develop valuable skills of discussion enquiry and analysis. You will be encouraged to form and present your own opinions. You will study one British History paper and one Modern European paper. ? British History topics include; Churchill the man the politician and the Second World War ? Modern European History topics include; the unification of Italy Mussolini?s dictatorship and European Foreign relations. In your second year the first unit you will study in your second year will look at Nazi Germany 1933-45 and how it managed to maintain control to what extent society was changed by the regime and the opposition that fought against it. You will also look at the racial aims and policies that lead to the Holocaust. In the second unit you will study Civil Rights in the USA between 1865 and 1992. You will look at the struggle of citizens in the United States to gain equality the role of African Americans in gaining civil rights (e.g. Martin Luther King) changes to the status of Native Americans and changing economic and employment opportunities for women.
