The course is an opportunity to learn the traditional craft of rag rug making in order to apply the techniques in a contemporary way. There will be a short introduction to cover the social and design history of the craft in Britain and North America. Simple techniques will be covered but rugs will be made using the hooking technique. Colour theory, composition and the use of graphic images will be covered. This craft is the ultimate in recycling, using scraps of fabric, discarded blankets, felted sweaters and old t-shirts. It is a process of transformation; to make a beautiful and functional object from previously un-regarded materials. What will I achieve? By the end of the course you will have mastered the simple hooking technique, developed a knowledge of design, how to source and prepare materials and will have learnt how to use images appropriate for the technique. All students will have completed a small rug, either rectangular or circular. Tutor: Deborah Schneebeli Morrell Deborah has written over 30 craft books on a variety of subjects and materials and has taught adults in art schools and gallery residencies. Deborah is a prolific 'maker' and is interested in both the internal and external processes of transformation in creativity. Fees 135.00 GBP plus 15.00 GBP materials fee
