A Level Media Studies

UPDATED 20161010 13:00:42

Please note that the information below refers to the current course. There will be a new specification from September 2017 that will be linear, and we will update this information when the specification has been confirmed. In Unit 1, students will investigate the media in order to understand how texts are created and how and why audiences respond to them. The focus is on contemporary media, and students will look at print texts, e-media and film in preparation for one exam to be taken at the end of AS. In Unit 2, students will complete two linked practical productions in response to a set brief provided by AQA. Students work in groups to produce a moving image piece and three individual print productions. Students learn to use programmes such Adobe Premier, Photoshop and Publisher, with one accompanying evaluation. In Year 2, students are encouraged to examine and develop their understanding of the media and its influential role in today's society as well as learning about and debating major contemporary media issues. They study two key topics: Identities and the Media and The Impact of New and Digital Media. They also produce their own case study of a range of texts, for both of these topics. In Unit 4, students will investigate a media topic, text or debate in more depth. Students conduct their own individual research into an area which reflects their own personal interests and write a 2000 word critical investigation on their findings. They then produce a practical production piece which links to their research.
