World Development A2: The two A2 units are: Concepts and Processes of World Development (exam) and an individual investigation (coursework). The coursework module gives students plenty of scope to pursue an area of development that interests them and develops skills of research, analysis and evaluation. Some of the case studies examined throughout the course include international dam projects such as the Three Gorges Dam, China, use and management of resources such as logging in Indonesia and exploitation of the Amazon, the work of NGOs such as WWF and Aid Agencies such as Oxfam and Christian Aid, the impact of HIV/AIDS and malaria in Africa, conflicts in Rwanda and Zimbabwe, comparing causes and consequences of poverty in Bangladesh and Scotland, inequality and stereotypes: women in Saudi Arabia, homosexuality in the UK and Australian aboriginals. World Development opens doors to a wide range of career opportunities in addition to providing students with an array of literary, analytical and evaluative skills valuable in any profession. Careers include working for NGOs, charities and aid agencies across the globe, the civil service, law, media and management, teaching, working in the social sector, development practitioners and policy and practice in international development. World Development also has strong links with Geography, Politics, Economics, History, RS and Sociology and is therefore an ideal choice if you are intending to study any of these subject areas at A Level or university.
