Travel & Tourism: The BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Travel and Tourism is an exciting qualification that provides a vehicle to gain valuable life skills, such as pioneering, budgeting, planning, communication, presentation and sales skills. Travel & Tourism is therefore a very relevant, practical and contemporary course which is delivered in conjunction with links made within the industry. The course involves working directly with these organisations to collect, analyse and evaluate information for the course. Students are taken on visits to tourist attractions and destinations such as Thorpe Park and York which then form the basis of their projects. They are also expected to analyse businesses associated with the travel industry, look at customer services, engage in role play and make presentations. There are no examinations for this course; assessment is based on students’ portfolios of work built up over the two years. During this time students cover 6 travel modules: Investigating Travel & Tourism, The Business of Travel & Tourism, The UK as a Destination, Customer Service in Travel & Tourism, The European Travel Market and Long-haul Travel destinations. Travel and Tourism is designed to provide an introduction to the industry and is ideally suited to those students wishing to pursue careers within the travel, tourism or leisure sectors. Such careers could include working in retail, for travel agents, for airlines, at visitor attractions, in the hotel industry, transport and tour operations – either in the UK or abroad. However, the course is relevant to any student wishing to pursue a business career and students often take this qualification alongside A Levels such as Business Studies, Economics, Geography, World Development or Sociology. The majority of careers involve communication, presentation and confidence skills and all of these life skills will be gained whilst studying the course.
