Theatre Studies AS: Theatre Studies is a lively and enjoyable A Level which invites you to develop practical theatre skills with in depth analysis of drama texts. Our drama facilities are excellent and you will be able to make use of the latest audio and lighting technology. Theatre Studies AS and A level are highly successful courses and we rival top grammar schools for results. Our students are motivated, enthusiastic and dedicated. They experience different drama genres, practitioners, texts and live theatre performances which allow them to create their own successfully devised pieces of theatre. They have access to excellent lighting and sound facilities and are supported and encouraged to develop technical skills further. Students must, however, be prepared to write detailed essays on a regular basis and commit to long rehearsal hours at certain stages of the course. English GCSE at grade C+ is a requirement because of the essay requirements on the exam paper. At AS Level you will explore practitioners whose impact in theatre has been far reaching such as Tim Supple and Julie Taymor and groundbreaking work by renowned theatre companies such as DV8, Frantic Assembly, Volcano and Kneehigh. You will study two set texts for the exam paper which are currently “The Shadow of a Gunman” by Sean O’Casey and “Playhouse Creatures" by April D'Angelis. You will also see live theatre performances over the course which will develop your understanding of theatre styles and to write an essay on the exam paper. Then there is the performance element of the course where you will perform an extract from a published play as part of a group, choosing to be assessed in a theatre skill such as acting, lighting, costume and set design etc. We organise theatre trips throughout the course to a variety of exciting performances and have been to a wide variety of venues to see some fantastic shows.
